The European aerospace and defense industries posted strong growth in 2024 with turnover increasing 10.1 percent to 325.7 billion euros. Direct employment in the sector reached a record 1.1 million workers according to ASD Secretary General Camille Grand.
The defense sector recorded the strongest rise. Its turnover grew 13.8 percent to 183.4 billion euros driven by higher spending and efforts to strengthen security due to the war in Ukraine Grand told reporters.
The civil aviation sector saw a 6 percent increase reaching 129.1 billion euros supported by recovering air traffic and demand for fuel efficient aircraft. Space sector turnover rose 3.1 percent to 13.2 billion euros.

The broader aerospace and defense ecosystem which includes more than 4000 companies supported nearly 4.2 million jobs and generated economic activity totaling 779 billion euros across Europe according to ASD.
ASD President Mikael Johansson urged the European Union to adopt an industrial strategy for civil aviation and to maintain defense investment warning that Europe’s leadership in high tech sectors cannot be taken for granted.
Research and development spending reached 25.2 billion euros up 9.4 percent although ASD noted that Europe still lags behind global competitors in innovation.
