Farmers escalate protests: E65 and Athens–Thessaloniki highway remain blocked
Greece remains effectively divided after midday Sunday as farmers intensified nationwide actions. Tractors from Karditsa have closed the E65 motorway, while farmers from Larissa and Magnesia blocked the Athens–Thessaloniki national road (PAThE) at the Nikaia interchange.
E65 still closed
The E65 motorway in Central Greece remains blocked by tractors placed along the route by farmers from Karditsa. Traffic prohibitions are in force for all vehicles at the entrances and exits on both sides of the Karditsa grade-separated interchange of the E65, and along the motorway section from km 72.3 (Sofades interchange) to km 97.3 (Proastio interchange) in both directions.
Farmers say they will remain at the blockade until solutions are offered and plan to hold an assembly this afternoon to decide their next organizational steps. The Federation of Agricultural Associations "I Anixi" announced that farmers from Trikala will set up a blockade at the Megalochori interchange next Wednesday.
Athens–Thessaloniki highway blocked at Nikaia
The Athens–Thessaloniki national road is also closed today at Nikaia, where Thessalian farmers’ tractors have been lined up on the carriageway since yesterday afternoon as part of the protest start. More machines were arriving to reinforce the blockade.
Traffic Police continue to divert traffic via alternative routes to avoid major disruption to vehicle flow.
Incidents, injuries and arrests
The first day of protests saw clashes in Nikaia and Platykampos when farmers tried to approach the national road and confronted riot police (MAT). Police used tear gas and stun grenades; there were injuries and three arrests, according to police statements. The police reported two arrests in Platykampos — one for violence against public employees, damage and resistance, and a second for damage — and a third arrest at the Nikaia interchange for bodily harm and resistance. The prosecutor’s decision on the detainees is expected later today.
New blockades planned
According to the article’s timetable, new roadblocks will be formed from 1 December in Malgara, Thebes (Thiva) and Livadeia, and on the following day (reported as the day after tomorrow) in Kastoria, Evros and Serres.
Authorities and farmers remain in a standoff as organizers coordinate further action and assemblies to set the next steps.
