On 27 May 2025, during Liverpool’s parade to celebrate their Premier League title, a car driven into crowds of supporters in the city centre. The driver, 54-year-old British former marine Paul Doyle, has now changed his plea and admitted guilt in court.
Doyle drove a Ford Galaxy into spectators at the parade, striking people ranging from children to the elderly and causing widespread panic. More than 130 people were injured in the incident; about 50 of those required hospital treatment, and dozens narrowly avoided potentially fatal injuries.
In court Doyle pleaded guilty to 31 offences. He faces serious charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and is expected to serve several years in prison. Defence lawyers had warned him that he was unlikely to avoid the heavy charges against him, prompting the change of plea.
The incident shocked Liverpool, occurring at a celebration for the team’s 2025 Premier League triumph, and left many victims and witnesses traumatised.
