Patmos and Leros are being placed on a "red alert" for water scarcity in the coming hours as their water reserves have fallen sharply. The same measures are expected to be applied soon to Attica, as part of actions coordinated by the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (Ρυθμιστική Αρχή Αποβλήτων, Ενέργειας και Υδάτων), due to ongoing drought conditions (information from the Ministry of Environment and Energy).
Reservoir and supply levels for Attica have reached historically low values. Authorities warn that, unless winter rains restore levels, available water may not be sufficient to meet demand for more than a year. Findings from the National Technical University (Polytechnic) and data from the National Observatory of Athens have reinforced concerns and leave little room for complacency.
According to ministry sources, the emergency declarations do not mean immediate restrictive measures for residents (for example, forced cuts or limits on household consumption). Instead, the alerts will mobilize the responsible local and regional authorities to accelerate financing, planning and construction of infrastructure projects aimed at tackling water shortages.
Ministry officials say the drought issue in Attica will be formally discussed on the morning of 27/11/2025 and emphasize that the emergency proclamations are based on the latest hydrological data and scientific documentation. Such declarations are intended to speed up administrative procedures, studies and project implementation — and explicitly not to impose emergency consumption measures on citizens.
