Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis & Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados visited Vonitsa today after the severe weather event that struck the area last Friday. He said the state has been supporting Vonitsa residents from the first moment and that crews from the Directorate for the Restoration of Natural Disaster Impacts (DAEFK) are working intensively to record damages immediately so that state aid procedures can be activated without delay.
Katsafados added that, in cooperation with the Municipality of Aktio‑Vonitsa and the Region of Western Greece, authorities are promoting solutions for the permanent protection of the area, since extreme weather events make infrastructure reinforcement necessary.
During the meeting, officials confirmed that inspections continue with reinforced engineering teams and that the process for compensation applications will move faster. Katsafados emphasized there will be continuous communication with the municipality and services to ensure full and rapid support for residents.
According to the Greek news agency APE‑MPE, Deputy Minister Katsafados and the Secretary General for the Restoration of Natural Disasters and State Aid, Petros Kampouris, carried out on‑site inspections at locations that suffered major damage. Katsafados also held an extensive meeting with Mayor Thanasis Kasolas, representatives of the municipal authority, the Region of Western Greece, and local stakeholders.
Key topics discussed included: - Recording and assessment of damage from floods that occurred on 10 and 21 November; - Progress of the on‑site inspections carried out by DAEFK teams; - Immediate needs of residents and businesses; - Better coordination to accelerate compensation procedures; and - Planning of permanent anti‑flood works to protect the area in the future.
