Overview
Storm system "Adel" is continuing to affect Greece. Rain and scattered thunderstorms began in the early hours of Wednesday, 26 November 2025, with particularly intense conditions reported on Corfu and across Epirus. The system is expected to peak Thursday (27/11) and Friday (28/11) as it moves eastward and expands to additional areas (source: meteo.gr / EAA).
Short-term forecast (meteo.gr / EAA)
Tonight (Wednesday) the weather will deteriorate further. Precipitation will intensify over the Ionian Islands, western mainland, the Peloponnese, and eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Western areas may experience very intense storms accompanied by hail. Overnight into Thursday the system will affect many other parts of the country.
Thursday (27/11): Periods of heavy to locally very heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Ionian Islands, western mainland, the Peloponnese, eastern Macedonia and Thrace, with localized hail. Hail in the Ionian Islands and western mainland — and secondarily in the Peloponnese — may reach relatively large sizes. Rain and isolated storms with occasionally intense episodes are also expected elsewhere, including Athens and Thessaloniki. Strong southerly winds (6–8 Beaufort) will blow over the seas, and significant dust transport from Africa will cause mud-rains.
Friday (28/11): The adverse weather will continue across most of the country. Heavy and locally very heavy rain and storms will affect the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese. Strong southerly winds and elevated dust concentrations will persist (source: meteo.gr / EAA).
Meteo maps (hail indication)
Prognostic maps from meteo.gr indicate areas of rain/storms and the highest probabilities of hail: - Black dots: hail up to 2 cm - Red triangles: hail greater than 2 cm - White dots: expected very large hail accumulations (source: meteo.gr / EAA)
Meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas (summary of his social post)
Former Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) director Thodoris Kolydas noted: - The Adel wave will be close to western Greece on Thursday, moving slowly east and feeding moisture into vulnerable areas on a S–SW flow; eastern Macedonia and Thrace will be more affected on Friday as the system shifts eastward. - Satellite imagery showed a very strong thunderstorm over Aetoloakarnania with cloud tops exceeding 11 km — an indicator of intense convection and "overshooting tops." - Rain totals today were high in the west (e.g., Pramanta in Ioannina recorded about 80 mm so far today, versus 256 mm last Friday) (source: post by Thodoris Kolydas).
EMY emergency bulletin and warnings
The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) updated its extreme weather bulletin (bulletin a.a.6 issued 25/11, updated 26/11/2025). Key points: - Wednesday (26/11): strong rain and thunderstorms expected in the Ionian islands (Corfu, Diapontio islands, Paxoi) and Epirus; later in Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos, Aetoloakarnania and western Peloponnese; from evening in eastern Macedonia. - Thursday (27/11) and Friday (28/11): the ADEL system will cause widespread rain and thunderstorms across nearly the entire country. Many areas of western and northern Greece and parts of the eastern Aegean can expect strong phenomena with local hail and occasionally very strong winds. - Specific Thursday (27/11) areas: Ionian islands, Epirus, western and central Sterea, western and southern Peloponnese, central and eastern Macedonia and Thrace. - Specific Friday (28/11) areas: central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, eastern Aegean and into early morning over western Greece (source: EMY).
Civil protection and government response
An interministerial coordination meeting was convened by the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Yiannis Kefalogiannis, with local authorities and all relevant civil-protection agencies. A scientific Risk Assessment Committee met beforehand. Authorities were briefed and asked to maintain maximum caution and readiness.
Measures decided/announced: - Fire Service placed on alert according to operational plans. - Armed Forces, Hellenic Police and Coast Guard placed on increased readiness. - Regional civil-protection mechanisms, Forestry Service, DEDDIE (distribution operator), ADMIE (transmission operator), EKAV (ambulance), and motorway concessionaires put on increased readiness. - Relevant services in the Ministries of Health; Infrastructure & Transport; Environment & Energy; Labour & Social Security; Culture; and Rural Development & Food placed on increased readiness. - The General Secretariat for Civil Protection issued "RED CODE" warnings for the Regions of Central Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia & Thrace today. Regions and municipalities of the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece and the Peloponnese had already been placed on Red Code alert since yesterday. Additional regions may be moved to Red Code tomorrow, depending on developments (source: General Secretariat for Civil Protection; EMY).
Practical notes
Expect very heavy local rainfall, thunderstorms and possible significant hail in the areas listed above; urban flooding and flash-flood risk are possible where rainfall is intense.
Strong southerly winds at sea (6–8 Beaufort) and airborne dust from Africa are likely; mud-rain can occur.
Follow local authorities' guidance and official warnings from EMY and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection (sources: EMY; General Secretariat for Civil Protection; meteo.gr / EAA; Thodoris Kolydas).
