UK prison environment connected to the mistaken releases
Twelve mistaken releases confirmed
Twelve prisoners were mistakenly released over the past 3 weeks in the UK, confirmed Justice Secretary David Lammy, who also stated that 2 of them remain unlocated. This new wave of errors adds to the 91 prisoners who were mistakenly released during the period April to October.
Cause of repeated errors
David Lammy attributed the recurring mistakes to the old manual prison system, stating that only full digitisation can reduce these incidents. He also clarified that the 2 individuals who are still at large are not dangerous offenders or sexual offenders.
Case of Hadush Kebatu
Public attention intensified after the mistaken release of Hadush Kebatu, who had been convicted of sexual assaults on a 14 year old and on a woman in an asylum seeker hotel. He was arrested 2 days later and has since been deported to Ethiopia.
Sharp increase in errors
Official data shows a significant rise in mistakes, from 115 mistaken releases in 2023 24 to 262 this year.
