Two rescue operations off the southern coast of Gavdos, Crete, resulted in the safe recovery of 109 migrants yesterday, authorities report.
Under the coordination of the Hellenic Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (EKSED), a Frontex vessel operating in the area located and rescued 69 people from a small boat in the early hours of the morning. The rescued individuals were safely transferred to the port of Chora Sfakion.
Earlier the previous night, a merchant ship flying a Singapore flag spotted another small craft carrying 40 people about 25 nautical miles south of Gavdos. That group was also brought ashore at Chora Sfakion after being located and assisted under EKSED coordination.
Local and international rescue teams continue to monitor arrivals in the region as operations to ensure the safety of people crossing the Mediterranean proceed.
