Karystianou Addresses the Abortion Issue
During a televised interview on Open, Maria Karystianou was asked about her views on abortion, stating that society should be the one to decide what should happen regarding the issue.
Karystianou on Public Consultation
She explained that because she respects free will, she considers abortion a matter for public dialogue, emphasizing that both the rights of the woman and the rights of the fetus are involved. As a pediatrician, she said she struggles to determine which rights should be prioritized.
The Ethical Dimension of Abortion
Karystianou added that while a woman can decide for her own body, abortion also presents an ethical question that she considers highly significant. She said public consultation is the most democratic method because it concerns a life that is just beginning.
Her Scientific Perspective
When asked if she opposes abortion in principle, she responded that her medical background places her in a position to care for a life that has already formed, while also understanding a woman’s decision about motherhood. She stated that from 3 months onward, the heartbeat signals a life that has been born, and that even premature babies can survive after only a few weeks. She acknowledged that abortion is legal but stressed that her concerns focus on the ethical aspect, suggesting that societal issues should be resolved through public consultation.
