A late night fire at a nursing home on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi left 16 people dead and injured 3 others, according to local emergency officials. The blaze erupted on Sunday in the city of Manado, where responders discovered many victims inside their rooms.
Authorities indicated that several residents had likely been resting when the fire began, limiting their ability to escape quickly. Emergency teams evacuated 12 people from the building and transported them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Fatal fires occur with unsettling frequency across Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of more than 17,000 islands. Earlier this month, a separate incident in a 7 story Jakarta building resulted in 22 deaths, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.
In 2023, an accident at a nickel processing plant in eastern Indonesia killed at least 12 people, underscoring persistent industrial and structural risks in the region.
