The U S government approved a 1.8 billion dollar sale of P 8 Poseidon maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft to Denmark despite increasing friction related to Greenland.
Officials said the package includes 3 Boeing P 8 Poseidon aircraft, with the State Department noting the deal aligns with U S foreign policy goals and strengthens a NATO ally central to European stability.
A similar move occurred a week earlier when the Trump administration authorized a 1 billion dollar sale of American made missiles to Copenhagen.
Tensions rose further after President Trump appointed Jeff Landry, the former governor of Louisiana, as the new U S special envoy for Greenland.
Statements from Trump since returning to office in January have emphasized that Washington “needs” Greenland for national security and should “take it,” comments that provoked sharp reactions in Denmark.
Authorities in Greenland, an autonomous territory, reiterated that the island is not for sale and affirmed that its people will determine their own future.
