Pathologists Urge Equal Access to Obesity Drug Prescribing
The Professional Union of Pathologists of Greece is pressing for immediate authorization that would allow every primary care pathologist, whether contracted or not, to prescribe recently introduced anti obesity medications.
The Union argues that enforcing mandatory electronic prescribing for these drugs, even when not reimbursed, would help curb a rising pattern of self medication linked to lifestyle trends that doctors describe as dangerous for patients.
Concerns Over Ethical Implications in Public Health Centers
Pathologists say that the Ministry has sparked serious ethical concerns by extending participation in the program to all Health Centers in addition to specialized hospital clinics.
The announcement has prompted complaints that the decision fuels unfair competition, especially after public sector physicians were newly permitted to operate private practices.
Doctors Cite Violations of Long Standing Legal Principles
The Union maintains that the Ministry is undermining legislation that equates the signatures of public and private physicians and safeguards universal rights to electronic prescribing across the medical profession.
Members insist that unequal access to prescribing new obesity drugs directly contradicts legal provisions that have governed medical practice for many years.
Union Criticizes Lack of Communication
Pathologists also denounce what they describe as a complete absence of communication between the Ministry and their professional body.
