A Routine Search Leads to an Unexpected Arrest in Crete A 37 year old man was brought to the Heraklion courthouse early on Saturday after being arrested during a police search at his home. The investigation was centered on suspicions surrounding his wife and her alleged ties to a criminal organization involved in illegal OPEKEPE subsidy claims. Authorities do not believe the man played any role in the subsidy fraud itself.

Officers reported that the man was detained solely as a result of what they found during the search. He now faces charges of aggravated illegal possession of firearms as well as illegal weapon possession, separate from the main subsidy fraud investigation.

Defense lawyers representing other detainees stated that their clients are awaiting a decision from the Heraklion Prosecutor’s Office regarding jurisdiction. According to them, the most probable outcome is that those involved will be transferred to Athens to appear before the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
