Retail Stores Opening on 3 Consecutive Sundays Retail stores across Greece are set to open on Sunday 14 December, Sunday 21 December, and Sunday 28 December 2025 as part of the Christmas holiday schedule. Most businesses will welcome customers as planned, though one sector has announced a last minute change to its participation.

Butcher Shops to Remain Closed on December 14

The Panhellenic Federation of Butchers POKK confirmed that butcher shops will stay closed on Sunday 14 December. The federation describes the move as an act of solidarity with farmers and livestock breeders, emphasizing concerns about the condition of the primary production sector.

In its public statement, POKK noted that the primary sector is facing considerable strain. According to the announcement, the sector is being neglected in ways that increase living costs and disrupt the entire food chain.

As butchers we know that the primary sector to which we are linked as the bridge between food production and consumers is not only harmed daily but also consistently undervalued. These missteps increase the cost of living for everyone and ignore the fact that we form part of the backbone of the Greek economy. For these reasons we support every peaceful initiative aimed at ensuring quality meat and other essential goods.

We call on all unions associations and members of POKK to demonstrate their support by keeping their shops closed on Sunday 14 December at the start of the Christmas holiday schedule of 2025.

Holiday Schedule for All Other Shops

Beyond the butcher sector, all other retail stores and supermarkets will remain open on Sunday 14 December, Sunday 21 December, and Sunday 28 December. Weekdays and Saturdays will follow extended hours to meet holiday demand. Shops will remain closed on the official holidays of 25 December and 26 December as well as on 1 January and 2 January.
