A pivotal meeting between representatives of farmers and senior Greek government officials is now under way at the Bodossakis Mansion, inside the office of Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. Another key figure present is Konstantinos Tsiaras, alongside additional officials from the relevant ministries.
Entering the building, Deputy Minister of Rural Development Giannis Andrianos stressed that they were attending with the clear intention of finding workable solutions for ongoing disputes. Clarifications on the details of the governments proposed support measures are expected to emerge over the course of the discussions.
Speaking earlier, Hatzidakis outlined the administrations two central priorities regarding the intensifying agricultural issue. According to him, fair and carefully considered remedies for farmers concerns must be pursued within both budgetary limits and European Union obligations. Simultaneously, strict adherence to the law is required when it comes to road blockades and disruptions to public transport networks.
Reflecting on recent developments, Hatzidakis emphasized that the government had never closed the door to dialogue but insisted that talks must be conducted according to the standards of a modern European state. Addressing payment complications with the European Commission, he noted that the administration completed payouts that were 13 percent higher compared to 2024 and satisfied 20 out of 27 demands raised by farmer union representatives.
Despite these steps, some factions within the farmers movement continue to resist engagement and impose conditions that officials consider unreasonable. Commenting on this, Hatzidakis made clear that the Prime Minister cannot hold meetings with unionists who are under investigation for irregularities involving agricultural subsidies or with individuals who have been involved in damaging police vehicles during demonstrations.
Urging a return to common sense, Hatzidakis called for respect toward institutions and reiterated that dialogue remains open to those willing to participate responsibly. Warning that the government will not remain a passive observer, he signaled that further escalation will be met with firm action.
