Greece is confronting a sustained escalation in flu activity during the week of 5 to 11 January, reflecting heightened pressure across the health system. Community positivity rates remain at high levels even though a slight decline was noted.
Hospital admissions linked to flu continue to climb, illustrating a clear upward trend. A total of 871 new flu related hospital admissions were recorded last week compared with 722 the previous week.
Intensive care units are also facing increased strain after 15 new severe laboratory confirmed flu cases required treatment in ICU settings. Eight additional deaths connected to laboratory confirmed flu were reported during the same period.
Since the start of flu surveillance, authorities have documented 45 ICU admissions attributed to flu and 15 flu related deaths. Laboratory analysis shows that out of 2,547 tested samples, 407 were positive for flu, with 406 identified as type A and 1 as type B.
Subtype testing of 264 flu A samples revealed that 181 belonged to A H3 and 83 to A H1 pdm09. These findings underline the continued circulation of multiple strains across the country.
The National Public Health Organization EODY stresses that vaccination remains the strongest line of protection. High risk groups are strongly urged to receive the flu vaccine without delay.
Health officials also recommend prompt medical consultation when symptoms appear to support timely antiviral treatment. Mask use in crowded indoor spaces is encouraged alongside protective habits such as respiratory hygiene, frequent hand washing and ensuring good ventilation.
