Italy approves a decree extending military assistance to Ukraine to 2026 after tensions within the governing coalition.

Government Signs Off on New Decree

Italy’s cabinet approved a decree extending military aid to Ukraine through 2026 after weeks of coalition turbulence exposed deep foreign policy disagreements. Tensions escalated when the far right League threatened to break ranks and abstain, raising fears of widening fractures within Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government.

Salvini’s Pushback Fuels Political Strain

League leader and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini objected to further military deliveries, saying additional support could encourage corruption in Kyiv and fail to shorten the conflict. Critics accused him of echoing Russian interests at a critical stage of the war.

New Measures Focus on Civilian and Defensive Needs

The latest decree mirrors earlier ones but introduces an expanded emphasis on logistical assistance, medical supplies for civilian use and equipment designed to counter missile attacks, drones and cyber threats. The full text has not yet been published by the Meloni administration.

Foreign Ministry Backs the Plan

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described the decree as balanced and reaffirmed that Italy will continue to support Ukraine politically, militarily, financially and economically. Parliament is required to approve the measure within 2 months.

Italy’s Track Record of Support

The country has delivered 12 military aid packages to Ukraine since 2022 without disclosing details, citing security classifications. General Luciano Portolano said Italy has provided more than €3 billion in assistance so far.

European Context

Italy remains a consistent contributor yet trails behind Germany, which has sent more than €15 billion in military supplies with additional commitments already announced. The latest decree signals Rome’s intent to maintain its role despite internal political pressures.
