Stefanidi Sets Sights on a Strong Comeback
Greek pole vault star Katerina Stefanidi is preparing to return to competition around 7 months after giving birth to her first child. The Olympic champion is gearing up for her first meet since her break from the sport.
Focused on Peak Form for the European Championships
With her main goal being top condition for the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham this summer, Stefanidi plans to re enter indoor competitions to regain rhythm and reconnect with her poles. Her return will take place at the New York meeting on 1 February, one of her favorite indoor events.
Quote Driven Motivation for 2026 Season
Speaking to the SEGAS website, she explained her plan for the season. She stated:
Our target for 2026 is the European Championships in August in Birmingham. I do not intend to do the full indoor season. But since I am starting to feel good and also need competitive pressure to push to the next training level, we decided to go to New York and depending on how it goes, we will see if we continue indoors or not.
Building Strength and Technique
Stefanidi added that she is currently using shorter poles and expects competition to help her transition to longer ones. She noted that a performance around 4.40 m in her first meet would be a positive sign, giving confidence that she could aim even higher in February. Her entire preparation is centered on being at her best for the European Championships.
Return After 2024 Olympic Participation
The 35 year old athlete, coached by Mitchell Krier, last competed on 8 September 2024 following her participation in the 2024 Olympic Games.
