Several Malta national water polo players are under investigation for alleged illegal betting during European Championship matches.

Controversy Emerges in Malta

A major controversy has erupted in Malta as several national water polo players are reportedly under investigation for suspected illegal betting linked to one of their own matches at the ongoing European Championship in Belgrade.

Suspicions Surround Match Against Montenegro

According to a report by the Times of Malta, 4 athletes are suspected of placing bets on the point difference in Malta’s opening match against Montenegro on 10 1, a game that ended with a 21 12 victory for the Balkan team.

Investigation May Expand to France Match

Sources suggest that the inquiry may also include the team’s subsequent match against France, which concluded with a 22 13 win for the tricolors.

Case Handled by Integrity Authority

The case is reportedly being managed by the Malta Sports Integrity Authority, which has declined to confirm or deny the claims. The police have taken the same stance.

Statement from Federation President

National federation president Karl Itzo stated that no official report has been filed and expressed hope that the allegations will prove unfounded, noting that such claims could tarnish the strong efforts made to develop the sport in recent years.
