Suspicions Surround Match Against Montenegro
According to a report by the Times of Malta, 4 athletes are suspected of placing bets on the point difference in Malta’s opening match against Montenegro on 10 1, a game that ended with a 21 12 victory for the Balkan team.
Investigation May Expand to France Match
Sources suggest that the inquiry may also include the team’s subsequent match against France, which concluded with a 22 13 win for the tricolors.
Case Handled by Integrity Authority
The case is reportedly being managed by the Malta Sports Integrity Authority, which has declined to confirm or deny the claims. The police have taken the same stance.
Statement from Federation President
National federation president Karl Itzo stated that no official report has been filed and expressed hope that the allegations will prove unfounded, noting that such claims could tarnish the strong efforts made to develop the sport in recent years.
