Arrival of Princess Irene’s Remains in Greece
The remains of Princess Irene, sister of Queen Sofia of Spain, are scheduled to arrive in Greece on Sunday 18 1 ahead of her funeral, which will take place on Monday 19 1 at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.
Special Flight Accompanying the Princess
On Sunday 18 January, Metropolitan Vissarion of Spain and Portugal will accompany Princess Irene’s remains on a special flight bound for Athens.
Farewell by the Spanish Royal Family
The Spanish royal family bid farewell to Princess Irene on Saturday. Her remains were transported and placed for viewing at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Andrew and Saint Demetrius in Madrid during the afternoon.
Support from the Younger Generation of Royals
Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia joined their parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, to support Queen Sofia during the memorial service for her sister.
Other Attendees at the Memorial in Madrid
The ceremony was also attended by Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina with their children, Alexia de Graeff, and several notable figures from the business sector.
Final Resting Place at Tatoi
Following the funeral service, Princess Irene will be laid to rest at the Tatoi cemetery, where she had attended the funeral of her brother, former King Constantine, only 3 years ago.
Attendance at the Athens Funeral
The funeral in Athens is expected to be attended by members of the Spanish royal family and the Glucksburg family. The Danish royal family will also be represented due to close family ties, as Anna Maria is the sister of Queen Margrethe and aunt of the current king.
British Royal Family Representatives
The British royal family will be represented by Sir Timothy Laurence, husband of Princess Anne, and Lady Gabriella Kingston.
Burial at Tatoi
After the ceremony at the Cathedral, Princess Irene will be taken to her final resting place at the Royal Cemetery of Tatoi. She will be buried beside her parents, Pavlos and Frederica, as well as her brother, former King Constantine.
