Rapid Shift Toward Severe Weather
Weather conditions are worsening across Greece starting Tuesday 20 January with strong eastern winds heavy local rainfall and snowfall in mountainous and semi mountainous regions. Meteorologists anticipate a significant intensification of these phenomena during the night and a broader impact across the country by Wednesday.
Early Conditions Across the Regions
Eastern Macedonia Thrace and the eastern island regions will experience scattered clouds. The rest of the country will see denser cloud coverage with local rain or sleet in the north initially focused in the eastern mainland and southern regions before spreading elsewhere. Nighttime conditions will become more severe especially in western areas where thunderstorms may develop along coastal zones. Snowfall is expected in mainland highlands as well as the elevated areas of Evia and Crete.
Strong Winds and Temperature Trends
Winds in the west will blow from the east southeast at 6 to 8 Beaufort reaching 9 and even 10 in the southern parts. Eastern regions will face east northeast winds at 4 to 6 Beaufort reaching 7 in the Aegean and up to 8 or 9 in southwestern marine areas. Southern winds will gradually strengthen through the day. Temperatures will rise slightly in the west and south. Maximum temperatures will reach 08 degrees in the north 12 to 14 in the western and southern mainland 14 to 15 in the Aegean and up to 17 in southern Crete and the Dodecanese. Frost will occur during morning and evening hours especially in northern inland areas.
Weather in Macedonia and Thrace
Western and central Macedonia will see increasing clouds with evening rain sleet and snow in mountainous and semi mountainous regions. Other areas will also see more clouds at night. Winds will blow east northeast at 4 to 6 Beaufort and up to 7 in eastern marine zones. Temperatures will range from -03 to 08 degrees with western Macedonia slightly colder by 2 to 3 degrees.
Ionian Islands Epirus Western Mainland and Western Peloponnese
Clouds will thicken across the region with local rain and mountain snowfall including semi mountainous Epirus and western mainland areas. Conditions will intensify at night with coastal thunderstorms. Winds will range from 6 to 8 Beaufort reaching 9 or 10 in the south. Temperatures will vary between 05 and 14 degrees though Epirus will be 4 to 6 degrees colder.
Thessaly Central Mainland Evia and Eastern Peloponnese
Dense clouds will bring local rain sleet and snow in higher areas. Nighttime conditions will intensify with sporadic thunderstorms particularly in southern coastal zones. Winds will range from 4 to 6 Beaufort rising to 7 or 8 in marine areas. Temperatures will range from 04 to 12 degrees with Thessaly being 3 to 4 degrees colder.
Cyclades and Crete Conditions
These regions will face dense clouds and local showers initially in Crete then later in the Cyclades. Mountain snowfall is expected in Crete and nighttime thunderstorms may develop in its western parts. Winds will gradually shift to east southeast at 7 to 8 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from 09 to 15 degrees and up to 17 in southern Crete.
Eastern Aegean Islands and Dodecanese
Clouds will be locally increased across the islands. Winds from the east northeast will blow at 4 to 6 Beaufort and up to 7 in the north shifting later to east southeast. Temperatures will range from 10 to 16 degrees though northern areas will be 5 to 6 degrees colder.
Attica Weather Outlook
Clouds will increase through the day bringing local rain by the afternoon and snowfall in the mountains. Winds will blow northeast at 4 to 6 Beaufort with slight weakening later. Temperatures will range from 05 to 11 degrees.
Thessaloniki Conditions
Cloud coverage will gradually thicken through the afternoon. Winds from the east will blow at 3 to 5 Beaufort. Temperatures will range from -02 to 08 degrees.

Rain and storms will spread across nearly all regions with strong phenomena expected in the Ionian western central and southern mainland gradually reaching the Cyclades Crete the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese. Heavy snowfall will strike mountainous and semi mountainous mainland areas and lower altitude regions in central and northern Greece. Winds will be east southeast at 6 to 8 Beaufort and up to 9 in the seas but will weaken in the west shifting to south southeast. Temperatures will rise slightly reaching 07 to 09 in the north 12 to 14 elsewhere and up to 19 in southern island regions. Frost will persist in the north during morning and evening hours.

Western regions the Cyclades Crete the Dodecanese and the eastern Aegean islands will see clouds rain and storms possibly severe until midday. Other regions will experience occasional clouds with local showers and isolated storms. Snow will fall on central and northern mountainous areas. Winds will be south southwest at 4 to 6 Beaufort though eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese may see southeast winds at 7 to 9. Temperatures will rise slightly in the north and central mainland.

Western southern and eastern Aegean regions will face increased cloudiness with rain and sporadic storms. Other areas will experience light clouds with temporary rain mainly in central and southern regions. Short lived snowfall will occur in northern mountain areas. Winds will blow south southwest at 4 to 5 Beaufort reaching 6 in the Aegean. Temperatures will rise slightly in the south.

Western southern and eastern Aegean regions will experience dense clouds with rain and sporadic storms especially in coastal areas. Other regions will see partly cloudy conditions with local rain mainly in central and northern areas. Light snowfall will appear in the mountainous regions of Epirus and western Macedonia. Winds will be south southwest at 4 to 5 Beaufort strengthening by nightfall. Temperatures will remain stable.
