Renters across the country have until Tuesday 30 December to submit corrective E1 declarations after many discovered missing or significantly reduced rent refunds. Confusion stemmed from a major error recorded during November’s tax clearing process, which mistakenly treated annual rent as monthly rent in numerous submissions.
Authorities are accepting amendments without penalties or additional tax obligations as long as the updates relate exclusively to rent expense fields. This exception offers relief to thousands who found refund amounts limited to as little as 20 or 30 euros due to the miscalculation.
Corrections are carried out electronically through the myAADE platform, where taxpayers must access their 2024 tax return and choose the option for a modified declaration. Users are instructed to review the sections concerning their primary residence or student housing for children to ensure accuracy.
A critical requirement is that the declared amount must reflect annual rent rather than the monthly figure. Those who complete the process by the deadline will receive their rent refund by 15 January 2026, provided a valid IBAN has been entered.
The rent refund corresponds to 1/12 of the annual rent declared on the E1 form. Caps apply depending on family status, with limits set at 800 euros for individuals without children, 850 euros for those with 1 child, and 900 euros for families with 2 children. An additional 50 euros is added for every extra child.
Eligibility for child related increases depends on whether the annual rent surpasses the corresponding thresholds. Lower rent amounts simply produce a refund equal to 1/12 of the actual annual expense.
