Inflation Rises in December as Food Prices Surge
Greece recorded inflation of 2.6% in December 2025, reflecting a slight increase from the 2.4% reading in November.
Sharp jumps in the prices of coffee chocolate and meat continued to drive the overall rise in consumer costs.
Officials noted that coffee saw an annual increase of 20.9% while chocolate and related products climbed 20% during the same period.
Fruit prices also moved higher by 10.6% adding further pressure to household spending.
Olive oil registered the most significant decline in December with prices falling by 34.1%.
Breakfast cereals dropped 5.3% and vegetables eased by 2.6% offering some relief to consumers.
Electricity charges increased 4.1% on an annual basis contributing to higher energy related costs.
Heating oil prices decreased 4.7% while natural gas experienced a deeper fall of 20.1%.
Rent costs rose 8.4% which represented a marginal slowdown from the 8.6% increase recorded in November.
Eurostat’s provisional figures showed Greece’s inflation rate at 2.9% for December while the eurozone rate edged down to 2%.
Food and non alcoholic beverages made a notable impact on the overall index rising 3.6% due to higher prices in items such as bread baked goods meats fresh fish dairy fruit chocolate pastries coffee and fruit juices.
Part of this increase was offset by declines in cereals olive oil and vegetables.
Alcohol and tobacco added 1.4% as prices for alcoholic drinks and cigarettes moved upward.
Clothing and footwear grew by 1.8% after increases in apparel and footwear items.
Housing costs advanced 2.8% driven by higher rents home repairs household related services and electricity.

both posted declines that helped limit the overall rise in housing expenses.
Household goods and services increased 0.5% mainly due to higher prices for domestic services.
Health related costs climbed 0.4% because of higher charges for medical dental and hospital services while lower pharmaceutical prices helped counterbalance part of the rise.
Transport prices advanced 1.7% after increases in new cars auto parts maintenance services and air travel fares.

Communication services edged up 0.3% mainly due to higher telephone service costs.
Recreation and culture increased 1% following rises in leisure durable goods small recreational items cultural activities and holiday packages.
Education costs climbed 2.8% as tuition fees rose across several levels of schooling.
Hotels cafes and restaurants registered a 6.9% rise largely driven by higher prices in dining establishments.
Other goods and services rose 0.6% after increases in hairdressing personal care health insurance and other services while declines in personal care products and vehicle insurance softened the overall impact.
