New Rent Reimbursement Plan Moves Forward
Legislation allowing retroactive reimbursement of 1 additional month of rent for 2025 is expected within the first 2 months of the year, enabling payment before the end of March. Around 50,000 doctors, nurses, and teachers serving away from their permanent residence are set to receive a total of 3 rent refunds in 2026.
The measure grants beneficiaries 1 extra reimbursement for last year and 2 reimbursements scheduled for November for the current year. Eligibility covers professionals working in regional areas who rent housing outside their permanent home, excluding those serving in Attica and Thessaloniki.
Who Qualifies for Support
The program imposes no income criteria so that it can act as an incentive for staff retention and recruitment in regions where health and education services face substantial shortages. Recipients must rent accommodation within the same regional unit where they work to ensure the support corresponds to actual housing needs.
Reimbursement Amounts and Conditions
The maximum reimbursement per payment reaches 800 euros, with an additional 50 euros provided for each dependent child. Each payment cannot exceed 1 twelfth of the annual rent declared to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue to ensure the amount reflects the real monthly rent.
The tripled support applies nationwide apart from Attica and Thessaloniki. To receive the maximum amount, the monthly rent paid in 2024 or 2025 must surpass 800 euros and must have been paid for all 12 months of the year.
