New Democracy Distances Itself from Chiletzakis Over Illegal Subsidy Case New Democracy has confirmed the expulsion of Myron Chiletzakis, stating that he had been an inactive member for several years and had long been removed from the party registry. The announcement followed revelations regarding alleged illegal subsidies amounting to an estimated 1.7 million euros. Chiletzakis, a well known agricultural unionist in Crete and president of the National Association of Small Agricultural Cooperatives, is accused of coordinating a group that allegedly secured unlawful payments from OPEKEPE. According to authorities, he is believed to have played a central role in managing the network that received the funds. New Democracy spokesperson Alexandra Sdoukou addressed the issue with a detailed post on X, stressing that Chiletzakis had not participated in any recent party activity or electoral procedures.

In her statement, Sdoukou also criticized PASOK for attempting to link the scandal to New Democracy, urging the opposition to contribute responsibly to the ongoing investigation into agricultural subsidy mismanagement. She stated that the party consistently suspends members immediately once any criminal involvement is detected.

PASOK Challenges New Democracy’s Account

PASOK issued its own statement shortly after Sdoukou’s interview, disputing the claim that Chiletzakis had been inactive. The party asserted that he had remained engaged and had even attended a New Democracy agricultural policy event in May 2025 alongside government ministers.

PASOK challenges the narrative presented by New Democracy.

In its statement, PASOK remarked that Chiletzakis appeared very active for someone described as dormant. The party questioned the accuracy of New Democracy’s portrayal of his status.
