Health Ministry Rolls Out Free Access to New Obesity Medications
The Health Ministry is taking a new step in its campaign against adult obesity by offering free access to cutting edge anti obesity medications. The initiative aims to make high cost treatments reachable for individuals who face heightened health risks due to excess weight.
Deputy Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki announced that eligible citizens will soon receive text messages guiding them through the next steps. Eligibility applies to participants already enrolled in the national cardiovascular risk prevention program who also register a high body mass index.
Eligibility and New Medical Screening
A recent joint ministerial decision incorporates a dedicated obesity medical examination into the cardiovascular prevention program. The addition ensures earlier detection and more structured medical oversight for individuals struggling with obesity.
Electronic referrals are automatically issued to individuals who meet the following criteria:
BMI 40 or higher
BMI between 37 and 40 accompanied by type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea or heart disease

These referrals remain valid for 1 month and must be completed in public health facilities. The aim is to streamline access and ensure timely medical evaluation.
Medical Evaluation and Follow Up Care
During the scheduled examination, physicians are required to document findings, determine the appropriate course of treatment and assess whether anti obesity medication is necessary.
When medication is prescribed, doctors must also offer practical dietary guidance to help individuals adopt healthier habits and support long term progress.
