Background Of The Conflict
A tragic incident in Aetolia Acarnania ended with the death of the 50 year old community president of Lithovouni, allegedly at the hands of a 44 year old man with whom he had long standing personal and friendly ties. Their relationship had reportedly deteriorated over the past year because of romantic rivalry, leading to growing tension.
Dispute At The Village Cafe
The confrontation began on Saturday morning when the two men argued inside the village cafe. According to witnesses, the dispute was triggered by the extramarital affair between the victim’s wife and the suspect, and her decision to return to her husband.
The Suspects Version Of Events
The 44 year old told police that he feared the victim intended to kill him, leading him to set up an ambush and shoot first as the victim drove by in his car. A woman passing by to feed her chickens saw the aftermath and initially believed it was a traffic accident as she had not realized what had occurred.
The Fatal Shot
The suspect claimed he saw the victim holding a weapon as he drove past, prompting him to fire first. Authorities are still examining this claim. He used a hunting shotgun loaded with ammunition typically used for wild boar. The pellets struck the victim at the back of the head, killing him instantly. The vehicle continued for about 70 meters before falling into a ravine and stopping in a field.
The Confession
After the shooting, the assailant returned home, called authorities and confessed, citing romantic jealousy as his motive. During the call he stated I am at my house come and get me. When officers from the Gavala Police Station arrived he handed over the shotgun used in the killing.
Ongoing Investigation
The suspect was taken to the Mesolongi Security Department for further questioning and is expected to appear before the prosecutor on Sunday.
