Konstantopoulou argued that the expression originates from the working class women of the textile industry during the 1950s and 1960s and that it symbolized a rejection of superficial urban norms. She emphasized that many women of that period especially those working in manual labor did not even wear tights and often wore thick socks or went barefoot. She insisted the phrase is class based and not sexist.
