Life inside an abandoned car
An 87 year old woman in Heraklion has been enduring life inside an abandoned car after years of deep financial hardship left her without stable housing.
Long term struggles have pushed her into extreme poverty, forcing her to convert the old vehicle into her only place of shelter.
Days and nights are spent there alone as she tries to cope with harsh weather and limited resources.
Newspapers used as insulation against the cold
Winter temperatures make her situation even more challenging, and the car is covered with layers of newspaper in an effort to block the wind and retain some warmth.
Inside the vehicle she keeps a few clothes, blankets and essential personal belongings that help her get through each day.
A major setback after theft
On 17 October she suffered another severe blow when 3 suitcases were stolen from the KTEL bus station area.
The missing items contained personal possessions and necessities, deepening the difficulties she already faced.
A desire to work and reclaim independence
Despite her circumstances she refuses to ask for charity and insists that her only wish is to work again and regain her independence.
She explains that she has never sought handouts and hopes the Municipality of Heraklion can help her secure the documents required to be employed legally.
Her dream is to one day have a small home in a quiet village surrounded by greenery and flowers far from what she describes as the harsh environment of the city.
