Greek Police arrest two suspects accused of throwing a parcel packed with phones and drugs into Diavata Prison.

Greek Police arrested two foreign nationals after they allegedly threw a parcel containing a mobile phone into the yard of Diavata Prison in Thessaloniki. Investigators reported that the suspects, aged 43 and 25, now face charges that include attempted supply of a mobile phone to an inmate, disobedience and narcotics related violations.

On January 11, officers observed the pair approaching the prison in a private car before the 25 year old suspect hurled the parcel over the perimeter. Their behaviour immediately drew attention from an officer stationed outside the facility, prompting an attempted stop.

The suspects fled in their vehicle and a police search was launched across the surrounding area. Members of the Prevention and Mediation Team later located the car nearby, where a small quantity of cocaine was found in the possession of the 43 year old suspect.

A follow up search by prison staff on January 12 led to the discovery of the discarded parcel within the facility grounds. Inside, authorities uncovered the following:

  • 5 mobile phones

  • 6 charging cables

  • 4 charging adapters

  • 4 SIM cards

  • 7.9 grams of cannabis

The two suspects are expected to be brought before the prosecutor as the investigation continues, according to information provided by GADTH.
