Apple plans to integrate Google Gemini models into the upgraded version of Siri expected later this year, marking a significant step in a new multiyear agreement between the two companies. The collaboration expands Google’s reach to an ecosystem of more than 2 billion active Apple devices across phones, tablets and computers.
Google technology already supports key features within Samsung’s Galaxy AI, reinforcing its growing influence across the industry. Financial terms of the Apple Google arrangement remain undisclosed.
Apple determined that Google’s Gemini platform offers a stronger base for the evolution of its Apple Foundation Models, according to Google, which noted that its systems will eventually enhance additional Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Alphabet had been competing with OpenAI for this strategic partnership as both companies continue to contest leadership in advanced artificial intelligence. Apple began allowing Siri to rely on ChatGPT in late 2024 to manage complex questions, and the new deal raises fresh questions about the future of its relationship with OpenAI.
Apple’s progress in artificial intelligence has been hampered by setbacks, including slow Siri improvements and lukewarm responses to its inhouse AI initiatives. Google and OpenAI have invested heavily in producing models that generate text, images and video, while Apple has struggled to keep pace.
The agreement builds on a long running arrangement that makes Google the default search engine across Apple devices, a setup that drives enormous traffic to Google while generating tens of billions annually in revenue for Apple.
News of the expanded partnership pushed Alphabet’s market value beyond 4 trillion dollars on Monday, following a year in which the company’s stock climbed 65 percent amid optimism surrounding its artificial intelligence progress.
