New Procurement Brings 15 Next Generation Trains to Athens
Greece is moving ahead with a major upgrade to the Athens Metro as Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Kyranakis announced a procurement competition for 15 state of the art trains. The project carries a budget of 150 million euros and will serve Lines 1 and 2 of the network.

Thessaloniki to Receive 14 Additional Trains
Kyranakis also confirmed that Thessaloniki will see its own metro operations strengthened with the acquisition of 14 new trains. This step is part of a coordinated national strategy to modernize public transportation across major urban centers.

Metro Extensions Move Into Implementation
The Deputy Minister confirmed that Athens Metro Line 2 will extend toward Ano Glyfada. Additionally a tender will soon open for extending Line 1 toward the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center marking another significant step for the city transport grid.
Tram Network Projects Advance
Alongside metro expansion plans the government is also pushing forward with tram development. This includes an active study for a tram extension toward Piraeus as well as preparatory studies for extending the tram from Agios Konstantinos to Lavrio following the logic of the suburban railway.
New Traffic Management Plan for Athens
To address growing traffic congestion Kyranakis highlighted that a comprehensive transformation plan for Athens road network will soon be unveiled. The initiative will cover new infrastructure major upgrades and the introduction of smart traffic management systems.
Focus on Road Safety and Modernized Transport Services
The Ministry is placing strong emphasis on improving road safety. A new driving and vehicle inspection system is being developed to ensure safer mobility conditions for all citizens. At the same time authorities aim to modernize transportation services through the adoption of innovative technologies enhancing efficiency and long term sustainability.
