A New Jersey community is reeling after authorities accused a mother of killing her two young sons, ages 5 and 7. Investigators say their father discovered them lifeless when he arrived home in the late afternoon on the day of the tragedy.
Police quickly identified 35 year old Priyatharsini Natarajan as the suspected perpetrator, according to early reports released by local outlets. Officers believe the children were likely strangled before their mother was taken into custody shortly afterward.
Detectives later uncovered a handwritten note inside the residence that appeared to include a confession. Information shared by officials indicates the message referenced planning the act and expressing an intention to end her own life.
Authorities have not yet determined a motive, and the circumstances remain the focus of an active investigation. Prosecutors have charged Natarajan with two counts of first degree homicide along with an additional third degree weapons offense.
Natarajan appeared expressionless in her post arrest photograph, a detail that has drawn widespread public attention as the legal process moves forward.
