Street market unions across Greece begin an indefinite strike demanding tax reforms and lower production costs.

Nationwide Strike to Halt Street Markets Across Greece From 7 January 2026

An indefinite stoppage of activity in Greece’s street markets begins on 7 January 2026 after multiple national and regional federations of producers and sellers jointly endorsed the decision.

Organizers highlight concerns over soaring market prices, the need to ease production costs for farmers, and the demand to abolish the imputed taxation system.

Additional grievances include calls to withdraw an extra 10 percent tax, resolve issues tied to electronic dispatch notes, and amend Law 4849 2021 which representatives say obstructs day to day market operations.

Federation officials argue the mobilization has become unavoidable, noting that although farmers and small producers sell goods at low prices, existing policies drive up costs at every stage of distribution.

Representatives also reaffirm their support for farmers nationwide while stressing that street markets play a crucial role in sustaining households and reinforcing the primary sector.
