An overnight explosion at a packed bar in Crans Montana has resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, according to local police in the Swiss resort town.
Authorities reported that the blast of unknown origin struck the Le Constellation bar around 1.30 a.m. local time on New Years Day, triggering a fire that caused extensive casualties.
Initial local reports referenced by Le Nouvelliste and public broadcaster RTS indicated that roughly 40 people may have died and at least 100 were injured, though officials have yet to confirm exact figures.
Police spokesperson Gaetan Latton stated that the number of victims remains unclear, while concerns continue to mount about the scale of the tragedy.
The venue was filled with more than 100 patrons, most of them young people celebrating the arrival of the new year, according to Rhône FM.
Investigators are examining whether the incident may have been caused by an uncontrolled ignition of fireworks inside the premises.
Local officials have established a dedicated phone line for families seeking information about loved ones, and the area around the bar has been sealed off.
A no fly zone has also been imposed over Crans Montana to prevent drone activity during the emergency operation.
Police are expected to deliver an official briefing at 11 a.m. Greek time.
