A major traffic accident unfolded early Friday in Nea Smyrni when 2 vehicles collided at a central intersection near the tram tracks. Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after the impact.
The crash occurred around 05:00 at the junction of Eleftheriou Venizelou and Mideias Mykalis streets, where initial reports suggest one driver allegedly ignored a STOP sign before striking another car. The force of the collision violently propelled one vehicle into a nearby tram pole.
Firefighters arriving at the scene worked to free 2 people trapped inside the wrecked vehicle, deploying 6 firefighters and 2 emergency vehicles in the operation. Paramedics transported both injured individuals to KAT Hospital.
An eyewitness stated that one of the injured was unconscious upon being pulled from the mangled car. Debris from the crash was scattered up to 50 meters across the tram tracks, creating a hazardous scene for passing traffic.
Fire and police units remained on site as authorities examined the area and secured the roadway. Uncertainty remains over whether the tram pole sustained damage or if tram services faced any disruption following the collision.
