Digital System Transforms Passport Document Transmission
A new digital application enabling the electronic transfer of passport related documents has officially launched following a Joint Ministerial Decision, marking a significant shift in how services communicate with the Passport and Security Documents Directorate of the Hellenic Police.
The platform was developed without any burden on the state budget and adheres fully to personal data protection legislation, ensuring secure handling of citizen information.
Key Advantages for Citizens and Services
The digitalization of the process introduces a series of improvements for applicants and public authorities.
Processing times shorten by 1 to 2 days since postal delivery of printed documents is no longer required.
Faster handling by operators becomes possible and fewer applications are rejected thanks to automatically pre filled data through system interoperability.
Several supporting documents are no longer needed, including a digital copy of the ID card, proof of e fee payment and certificates related to theft or loss conditions.
Courier related expenses drop significantly.
Passport security strengthens because facial photographs are now captured in high quality digital format.
Implementation and Next Steps
All Passport Offices and Document Intake Points across Greece are already using the new application as part of the first rollout phase.
An expansion to Greek Consular Authorities abroad is planned within 2026, a move expected to accelerate passport issuance for citizens living overseas by up to 30 days.
The system became operational on December 31 2025, initiating a transitional period during which traditional document transfer methods may continue to be used until January 31 2026.
A new type of ID card will become mandatory for passport issuance starting August 3 2026, further enhancing document security.
