Storm Devastation Sweeps Across Ioannina
A powerful weather front blasted the Ioannina region with gale force winds, triggering extensive destruction. A tornado that touched down in Kalpaki completely demolished a poultry farm and uprooted numerous trees.
Local officials reported that the twister wiped out a facility housing approximately 40000 chickens. The violent winds tore roofs off 3 separate buildings before collapsing the walls, resulting in the deaths of the entire flock.
Military Camp Damage and Evacuations
Additional structural damage struck the Kalpaki military camp, which is currently undergoing shutdown procedures. The tornado affected the church of Saint George along with surrounding walls and guard posts.
Remaining soldiers stationed at the site were relocated to Ioannina for safety following the rapid deterioration of conditions.
Snowfall in the Mountains
Mountain communities across Ioannina experienced continuous snowfall as the storm progressed. Snow removal crews worked from early morning hours in Metsovo, Milia, and Eastern Zagori to keep the provincial road network open.
Rising River Levels and Worsening Floods
Heavy rainfall across Epirus pushed rivers close to overflowing, with the Louros River nearing its limits. The Kalamas River has already breached its banks, flooding nearby coastal zones.
Further complications are expected as water and debris from mountain streams continue to pour into the river system, increasing the risk of additional blockages and intensifying flood conditions.
