Mass Culling Continues As Sheep And Goat Pox Spreads Across Greece
Greece has surpassed a critical threshold in its fight against sheep and goat pox, with 470274 animals culled between August 2024 and January 9 2026 under national health protocols aimed at containing the disease.
Fresh data from the National Scientific Committee for the Management and Control of Sheep and Goat Pox and the Ministry of Rural Development and Food shows that 2042 confirmed infections have been reported across 2540 farms nationwide.
Laboratory testing identified 57 new cases between December 20 2025 and January 9 2026, highlighting both the persistence and geographical spread of the outbreak.
Authorities have documented infections in 16 regions during this period, reflecting a wide distribution of hotspots.
Aitoloakarnania recorded 7 cases, Achaia reported 6, and Drama confirmed 1. Ilia documented 3 infections, Imathia logged 1, while Kavala registered 2. Karditsa detected 3 cases, Kilkis reported 2, and Larisa confirmed another 2. Magnesia and the Sporades registered 3, Xanthi reported 9, and Pella identified 4. Pieria confirmed 6 cases, Rodopi logged 5, Serres reported 1, and the Thessaloniki region detected 2.
