A 50 year old Albanian man was arrested in Thessaloniki after allegedly transporting Afghan migrants and attempting to evade police.

A 50 year old Albanian man was taken into custody in Thessaloniki on allegations of illegally transporting migrants. Another layer of concern emerged as police confirmed he was already wanted for drug trafficking under an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Thesprotia investigator. Officers reported that he had been carrying 5 Afghan nationals, among them 3 accompanied minors, when they intercepted him.

Police from the Thessaloniki Migration Management Department located the suspect on the Egnatia Odos highway near the Sochos junction. The driver accelerated after ignoring signals to pull over. The vehicle was immobilised shortly afterward near the Analipsi junction on the same highway.

None of the migrants possessed travel documents, according to police. They had crossed into Greece through the Evros region, where the suspect is believed to have collected them before heading toward the interior of the country.
