Surfer Leaps Into Action Amid Dangerous Conditions
A small fishing boat carrying 2 men overturned at the Strymon River estuary on January 3 after fierce winds battered the area. Both fishermen were suddenly thrown into freezing waters, where one quickly lost consciousness while the other fought desperately to stay afloat.
Pandemonium erupted on the shore as witnesses watched the struggle unfold. A woman was seen calling for help while urging the conscious fisherman to keep fighting, adding to the urgency of the moment.
Experienced Surfer Responds Without Hesitation
A 31 year old surfer named Nikos Mavridis arrived from a nearby beach and immediately understood the gravity of the situation. His years of experience in the water since age 15 helped him assess the danger before diving straight into the cold sea.
Guiding the fisherman toward safety, he relied on his surfboard and steady determination. A human chain formed along the shore and worked with him to bring the exhausted man onto land and closer to warmth.
Nikos Mavridis said he weighed the situation and decided to act. He said he placed the mans hands on the board and swam alongside him.
Authorities Mobilize As One Man Is Lost
Efforts to save the second fisherman proved unsuccessful despite rapid mobilization by the authorities. Three fishing vessels, a land vehicle, and a Super Puma helicopter joined the operation, but the man drowned shortly after the boat overturned.
The survivor was transported to the Ofrinio Health Center suffering from hypothermia but in stable condition. The body of the deceased fisherman was taken to Stavros near Thessaloniki, bringing a tragic end to the dramatic incident.
