A 45 year old commander of the Serres fire brigade unit was discovered dead on Mount Belles on 03 January 2026, bringing a somber conclusion to a search that had lasted nearly 2 weeks.
Hunters located the body at the area known as Honi at an altitude of 1430 meters, prompting an immediate notification to emergency teams.
Authorities reported that the body bore bite marks from wild animals, and early assessments indicate that suicide is considered the most probable scenario.
Investigators noted that the man was found almost face down in a fetal position and dressed in only minimal clothing.
Teams from OFKATH reached the scene shortly after receiving the alert and assisted officers in collecting evidence before removing the remains from the mountainside.
Relatives had been searching for the missing commander since 23 December, and a Silver Alert had been issued in hopes of locating him.
Information shared with investigators revealed that a small handwritten note was found in the pocket of one of his jackets, containing the names of his wife and 2 children alongside the words I love you.
The note did not include any date, leaving open questions regarding when it might have been written.
