Urgent Probe Launched Into Athens FIR Blackout
An urgent prosecutorial investigation has been initiated after a major communications blackout disrupted the Athens FIR. Authorities moved swiftly when the Athens Misdemeanours Prosecutor’s Office opened a probe headed by Aristidis Koreas. The cybercrime division has been assigned to lead the inquiry, focusing on whether dangerous interference with aircraft communications occurred and how disruptions spread across nearly all Athens FIR frequencies. Officials noted that the review aims to uncover the source and nature of the interference that caused the widespread issue.
Technical Issue Fully Resolved
The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority reported that the communications failure stemmed from noise like interference likely linked to telecommunications infrastructure. Normal operations resumed once frequencies and operational phone systems were restored by 17:00 local time. The NOTAM issued during the outage has since been lifted, clearing the way for airspace capacity and traffic flow to return to standard levels by 17:45. Flight safety remained fully secured throughout the incident in line with international standards.
